WHAT MAKES ME DIFFERENT

I didn't start out shooting weddings. Before I received my BFA in photography and imaging from ArtCenter College of Design in Pasadena, I was a street photographer. I loved the lack of control. You were forced to deal with whatever lighting was available, and had no control over the people in my photographers. I loved capturing what was in front of me, instead of me creating the image myself. What got me into photography to begin with was a fascination of capturing the world around me, not creating the images myself. As I progressed further into my photographic journey, I was introduced to the many different genres within it. This included portrait, fashion, fine art, product, architecture, lifestyle, still life, and more. Having experience in such a diverse set of photographic styles has made me a more renaissance photographer today. Though wedding photography was not an offered course while I was in school, it is what I have gravitated to since graduating. It allows me to feel proud to be able to be the one to create images for a couple on their wedding day, and to be able to do so in such a way that utilizes my experience in all the other types of photography as well. When I shoot weddings, I try to be a fly on the wall. If I had the power to turn invisible I would. I feel that the best images are the ones taken of people when they have no idea that they're being photographed. It captures a certain genuineness about them and of the moment that is unattainable any other way. Of course, I will still make sure to take those posed shots with all the family and guests if asked to do so, but my real goal is to be there as much as a documentarian as a photographer.
